Lake Victoria,
by Barack Abonyo, Emily Cornell, Joanne Fixman,
Anne Margolis, James von Rittman, Dorothy Wallace, Heidi Williams
This text interweaves mathematics, biology, history and culture of the lakes region of East Africa.
The ecology of Lake Victoria, the introduction of species to the lake, and the epidemiology of the
malaria endemic to the region provide a background against which students study complex modeling problems.
Systems of nonlinear first order differential equations are the basic mathematical element, with an
accompanying treatment of phase portraits, stable and unstable equilibria and bifurcations.
