Math 20 Course Information

Discrete Probability

Summer term 2005

**Meeting times. **This course meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:00 am in Moore 110,
with X-hour at 12:00-12:50 Thursday. Professor Winkler is teaching the course.

**Homework. **Homework problems will be due each class at the beginning of class. Homework assignments
will be posted on the class web page (www.math.dartmouth.edu/~m20x05). They will normally be assigned
in class and posted after class so that the homework can be based on what is actually covered in class.

**Grading. ** Final exam 50%, hour exams 20% each, homework and class participation 10%.
Homework will be graded by Anh Nguyen, when it is handed in on time; otherwise it will just be checked off.
You shouldn't worry about missing an occasional assignment, but make sure you have looked at all of them
at some point!

**Exams. **There will be two "mid-term" exams and a final. The first mid-term will be held at
classtime, in Moore 110, on Friday July 15, the second on Friday August 5.

**Office Hours. **Professor Winkler's office hours are Mon 2-3, Tu 11-12 and Th 2-3, with occasional
amendments posted on the website. You are also welcome to make appointments or just meet after class
if these times are not convenient; but, please do come at some point early in the term, even if
you have no problem, just to introduce yourself.

**Web page and Text. **The web page for the course is at
http://www.math.dartmouth.edu/~m20x05. The text for
the course Introduction to Probability by Grinstead and Snell (2nd revised edition). This book is available
from the bookstore (e.g. Wheelock Books at $47.74) and also may be downloaded from
http://www/dartmouth.edu/~chance/teaching_aids/book_articles/probability_book/pdf.html.

**Students with disabilities. **Any student with a documented disability needing academic adjustments
or accommodations is requested to speak with the professor as soon as possible, but in any case by
July 1. All discussions will remain confidential, although the Academic Skills Center may be consulted
to verify the documentation of the disability.
