Daily Homework Assignments

Assignments should be posted immediately after lecture.  If you notice that the days assignment has not be posted, please inform me as soon as convenient by sending me email via this link: dana.williams@dartmouth.edu

Problems listed in parentheses (e.g., (2, 3, 4)) will not be graded, but are important enough that I felt they should be assigned.  Writing them up is highly recommended, but not required.  To make the grader's life easier, do not turn in these problems with the rest of your assignment.

WEEK 1: June 25 & 26

Assignment 1:  Friday's Lecture, Due Wednesday, June 30.
  • Read section 1.1
  • Work problems 2, 4, 12, 14 and 28.
  • We have class at 8 on Saturday.  (Ouch!)
Assignment 2:  Saturday's Lecture, Due Wednesday, June 30.
  • Read section 1.2
  • Work problems 2, 4, 10, 12, 16 and 20.



WEEK 2: June 28

Assignment 3:  Monday's Lecture, Due Wednesday, July 7.
  • Read section 1.3 and the beginning of section 1.4
  • On page 37-38 work problems 6, 10, 12, 21, 26, 28.
  • On page 47 work problems 2 and 4.
  • There will be no class Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
  • Also, Monday, July 5th is a College holiday.




WEEK 3: July 7 to July 9

Assignment 4:  Wednesday's Lecture, Due Monday, July 12.
  • Read section 1.4
  • On page 47-49 work problems 12, 14, (17), 18, 31 and 33.
Assignment 4A:  Thursday's Workshop
  • We will meet in our x-hour.
  • Workshop problems: click here.  Each group should turn in one set of solution to me on Monday.  (Do not turn the workshop problems into the homework boxes.)
Assignment 5:  Friday's Lecture, Due Monday, July 12.
  • Read section 1.5

  • Read section 1.6.  (There will be no written assignment for section 1.6.)

LAST WEEK: August 23 to 25

Assignment 23: Monday's lecture, August 23rd, Not to be turned in.  
  • The homework assignments for Monday and Wednesday will not be collected.  (Nor is it likely that you assignments turned in on Monday the 23rd will be returned before the final.)  Nevertheless, this material is important and likely to be on the final exam.
  • Read Section 7.1
  • In Section 7.1: 14, (17), 20, 22, (29) and 30.
Assignment 24: Wednesday's lecture, Not to be turned in.
  • Read Section 7.4.  Obviously, you are not responsible for the parts of section 7.4 that refer to sections we have not covered in class or homework.  In fact, you are just responsible for the material covered in lecture on Monday and Wednesday.
  • Section 7.4: 8, 10, 12, 13 (see the solution to the practive problem at the end of the section on page 482), 17, and 18,  (21 and 23).
  • Start studying for the final.  The final is Sunday, August 29th from 11:30 to 2:30 in Kemeny 105 (our usual classroom).
