Daily Homework Assignments

Assignments should be posted immediately after lecture.  If you notice that the days assignment has not be posted, please inform me as soon as convenient by sending me email via this link: dana.williams@dartmouth.edu

Problems listed in parentheses (e.g., (2, 3, 4)) will not be graded, but are important enough that I felt they should be assigned.  Writing them up is highly recommended, but not required.  To make the grader's life easier, do not turn in these problems with the rest of your assignment.

WEEK 1: June 25 & 26

Assignment 1:  Friday's Lecture, Due Wednesday, June 30.
  • Chapter 1
  • In Chapter 1, work problems (1, 2, 3), 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and (13).
  • Read Chapter 0, pages 3-9.
  • We have class at 11:45 on Saturday.
Assignment 2:  Saturday's Lecture, Due Wednesday, June 30.
  • Read Chapter 2.
  • In Chapter 0: (1, 2 and 3).
  • In Chapter 2: (1, 4, 5,) 8, (13), 14, 16, 17, (22), 35.



WEEK 2: June 28

Assignment 3:  Monday's Lecture, Due Wednesday, July 7.
  • Read Chapter 3.
  • In Chapter 3: (1, 11), 10, 13, (17, 18), 19, 20, (21, 22), 24 and 35.
  • There will be no class Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
  • Also, Monday, July 5th is a College holiday.




WEEK 3: July 7 to July 9

Assignment 4:  Wednesday's Lecture, Due Monday, July 12.
  • Read Chapter 4.
  • In Chapter 4: (7, 9), 11, (14), 22, 24, (34), 35, and 62.
Assignment 4A:  Thursday's Workshop
  • We will meet in our x-hour.
  • Workshop problems: click here.  Each group should turn in one complete set of solutions to me on Monday.  Do not turn the workshop problems to the homework boxes.
Assignment 5:  Friday's Lecture, Due Monday, July 12.
  • Read Chapter 5 through page 101.
  • In Chapter 5: (3, 4, 5), 10, (and 18).



WEEK 4: July 12 to July 16
Assignment 6: Monday, July 12, Due Monday, July 19
  • Read Chapter 5 through an including Theorem 5.7.  (You may find the rest of Chapter 5 interesting as well.)
  • In Chapter 5: (9, 11), 13, (14), 18, 19, (20), 24, (25), and (30).
Assignment 7: Wednesday's Lecture, Due Monday, July 19
  • Read Chapter 6 through and including Theorem 6.2.
  • In Chapter 6: (1), 6, (7), 17, 21, 22, 24,  (29), 32 and 36.  (You prove your iff in #36.)
  • As the Chapters get more sophisticated, it gets harder to predict where we'll finish each lecture, so I will be making the assignments shortly after each lecture.  If the assignment hasn't been updated by 5pm on the day of the lecture, please email me a gentle reminder.
Assignment 7A: Thursday's Lecture, Due Monday, July 19
  • Read Chapter 6.

Assignment 8: Friday's Lecture, Due Monday, July 19
  • Read Chapter 7 through and including Theorem 7.3.

  • Finish reading Chapter 10.
  • Read the first two pages of Chapter 11.

  • Read Chapter 11 thru and including Lemma 1 of the proof of the Fundamental Theorem.
  • In Chapter 11, work (1, 2, 3, 4), 6, (13), 15, 19, 21, 22
Assignment 15: Friday's Lecture, Due Monday, August 2
  • Read the rest of Chapter 11.
  • Read Chapter 12 up to but not including the subsection on subrings.

  • Finish Chapter 12
  • Study for the midterm.

  • Read Chapter 18 through Theorem 18.2.  (You should read the discussion on Fermat's Last Theorem for fun.)

Although you will be responsibe for the following assignments, they will not be collected and graded.
