In our first lecture, we will examine the the ZIP proof. Please read Conway's ZIP Proof by J. Weeks and G. Francis. Your first assignment is due Wednesday April 2nd and is to do problems 1-5 on pages 144 and 145 of the Munkres' handout, and the following problems .
This week we continue our intuitive proof of th classification of surfaces. We will be examining a section version of the classification of surfaces found in the "surface section" of the Knots Knotes , pages 32-48. Please read this section and by Thursday April 10th be prepared to present your ideas on exercises 5.4.12,5.4.13,5.6.2, 5.6.3,5.6.4, 5.6.5, 5.7.10,5.7.11,5.7.12,5.7.13,5.7.14 and 5.7.15 of the Knots Knotes.
Week 3 (April 7-April 11) :
We begin an excursion into algebraic topology. Read section 9.1 and 9.2 from the Munkres handout and chapter 0 of Hatcher. Thursday April 10th be prepared to present your ideas on exercises 1,2, and 3 section of 9.1 of Munkres. Also every one should write up and turn in two distinct solutions to problem 5.7.10 of the Knots Knotes.
We begin an excursion into algebraic topology. Read sections 52 and 53 of Munkres. Thursday April 24th be prepared to present your ideas on exercises 2-5 in section 52 and exercises 2-5 from section 53, and the first two exercises in Groupoid madness .
Please write up solutions to the first two problems from the Groupoid assignment and problem 5 from section 52 from last weeks assignment and turn them in by next Thursday. Also, on Thursday May 1st be prepared to present your ideas on exercises 1,3,5,6 and 8 in section 54 and exercises 1 and 2 from section 55.
Turn in the exam on Thursday May 8th by X-hour. We will discuss the exam at that X-hour. Attendance is optional.
We will finish chapter 9 of the text this week. Here is our liftasaurus proof of the Borsuk Ulam theorem. Next we will begin chapter 11 of Munkres, which corresponds to section 1.2 in Hatcher. The presentation in lecture will more closely follow Hatcher's lovely presentation. On Thursday May 15 be prepared to present your ideas on exercises 2,3 from section 57, 2,4 from section 58, and 1,2,3 from section 59 of Munkres.
On Thursday May 15 be prepared to present your ideas on problems 4,7,8 and 9 of section 1.2 of Hatcher.
Our final exam will handed out this Thusday and due by June 4th. You will find the liftasaurus , the rotation madness handout and the first exam useful.
