Abstract: Many useful invariants of knots and links can be defined using signature and signature-type (the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer eta invariant) tools. We will survey the development of these invariants over the past many years, and discuss how they are used to study and perhaps, in some sense, classify higher-dimensional knots and some higher dimensional links, up to "concordance". This talk will be accessible to graduate students.
