Abstract: This talk will look at various ways that one might go about the task of classifying all finite groups. We'll single out primitive permutation groups as being of special interest, which will naturally lead us on to recent work on constructing the maximal subgroups of the finite simple groups. This talk will be accessible to nonspecialists.

This talk will be accessible to undergraduates.
