Abstract: The purpose of this talk is to show from scratch that there are finitely many isomorphism classes of (real and complex) Lie superalgebras based on gl(2) associated naturally to the adjoint representation. Related results for the Lie superalgebras based on u(2) and the torus will also be given. Some Lie supergroups arising from these Lie superalgebras will be exhibited and it will be explained from first principles how to obtain them.

This talk will be accessible to general faculty.
