Math 11

Announcements:

• The final exam will take place on Friday, Nov 21, from 3 to 6pm in Spauling Auditorium at the Hop. If you have another exam *at the same time*, please let your instructor now as soon as possible.
• The final exam will be cumulative, so it may contain questions about any of the material covered throughout the course, but there will be an emphasis on the material not tested in the two midterm exams.
• The solutions to the first and second midterm exams have been posted in the homework section, next to where the homework solutions are usually posted.

This course covers differential, integral, and vector calculus for functions of several variables. The mathematical tools and methods we will develop are applied extensively in engineering, economics, and throughout the physical sciences. Course topics include: vectors, partial derivatives, multivariable optimization, line integrals and multiple integrals, vector fields, Green's theorem, and Stokes's theorem.

There will be two midterm examinations and a final examination. The exams are scheduled as follows:

Some students may wish to take part in religious observances that occur during this academic term. If you have a religious observance, scheduled extracurricular activity such as a game or performance, scheduled laboratory for another course, or a similar commitment that conflicts with one of the exams, please meet with your instructor before the end of the second week of the term to discuss appropriate accommodations.

• Webwork problems will be assigned daily. Solutions should be completed by the next class period. However, to allow for questions, these problems will not be officially collected until the class period after that, by 8:45 a.m. For example, a Webwork assignment made on Monday should be completed by Wednesday, but will not be considered late if completed by Friday. Please do your best to consistently complete Webwork assignments by the next class period: it will significantly increase your performance in the course.


• Written assignments will be assigned weekly and are to be turned into the homework boxes in Kemeny. These assignments will be due each Wednesday and they will typically cover the material up through the previous Friday. So the first written assignment covers the first three classes worth of material and is due on Wednesday of week 2.


• Late homework will be accepted only in case of serious, unpredictable events such as documented illness or family emergency. If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to submit all homework on time, and to arrange to get notes from a classmate. Unexcused late and missing homework counts zero.

The course grade will be based upon the exams and the homework as follows:

Academic integrity is at the core of our mission as mathematicians and educators, and we take it very seriously. We also believe in working and learning together.

Collaboration on homework is permitted and encouraged, but it is a violation of the honor code for someone to provide the answers for you.

On written homework, you are encouraged to work together, and you may get help from others, but you must write up the answers yourself. If you are part of a group of students that produces an answer to a problem, you may not just copy the group's answer: you must write up the answer individually, written up in your own way.

On exams, you may not give or receive help from anyone. Exams in this course are closed book, and no notes, calculators or other electronic devices are permitted.

The teaching assistants for this course are mathematics graduate students Benjamin Breen, David Freund, and Sam Schiavone. They will be available to answer questions and, in particular, to help with your homework on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, 7-9 pm in Kemeny 006. These tutorials will begin on Tuesday, September 16.

Also note that the Tutor Clearinghouse will have private one-on-one tutors available for Math 11. The tutors are recruited on the basis that they have done well in the subject, and are trained by the Academic Skills Center. If a student receives financial aid, the College will pay for three hours of tutoring per week. If you would like to have a tutor, please go to 301 Collis and fill out an application as early in the term as possible.
