Grading
The course grade is calculated using the following weights. Each component is expressed as a percentage from 0 to 100.
| Component | Weight |
|---|---|
| Midterm 1 | 30% |
| Midterm 2 | 30% |
| Final exam | 20% |
| Problem sets | 8% |
| Classwork / quizzes | 12% |
| Total | 100% |
The grade scale is as follows:
- A: 93%–100%
- A-: 90%–92.9%
- B+: 87%–89.9%
- B: 83%–86.9%
- B-: 80%–82.9%
- C+: 77%–79.9%
- C: 73%–76.9%
- C-: 70%–72.9%
- D: 60%–69.9%
- E: Below 60%

Homework and quizzes
Problem sets are posted on Canvas. Use the Section 1 schedule or the Section 2 syllabus for assignment and due dates. Section 1 quizzes take place on the Thursdays listed in its schedule, during regular class meetings. Section 2 quizzes use its Thursday x-hour as described in its syllabus.
Cooperation on homework is permitted and encouraged, but you must write up your solutions independently. Acknowledge any collaborative work at the end of each assignment. Consult your instructor’s section information for late-work and make-up policies.
Textbook
Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, 11th edition, by Boyce, DiPrima, and Meade (Wiley, 2017). Textbook references in the lecture plan use this edition.
Course topics
First-order differential equations and modeling; second-order linear equations; systems of differential equations and eigenvalue methods; nonlinear systems, stability, and population models; Laplace transforms and initial-value problems.
Prerequisite
Mathematics 13.
Academic integrity
Students are expected to follow Dartmouth’s Academic Honor Principle. Plagiarism, collusion, and other violations may be referred to the Committee on Standards.
Accessibility
Students who need disability-related accommodations should contact their instructor early in the term and coordinate with Student Accessibility Services. Accommodation discussions will be treated confidentially.
