The second midterm will take place during the week of October 29. The format will be similar to the first midterm. The in-class portion will be held on Tuesday, October 30 during the x-hour (12:00 - 12:50). Calculators are allowed but are to be used only for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The take-home portion will be posted later in the week. There will be office hours on Monday, October 29 from 12:30 to 2:30.

The first midterm will take place during week 5 of the course. On Tuesday during the x-hour you will be given the in-class portion of the exam. The take-home portion will be posted on the web page on Wednesday afternoon. It will be due on Friday during class. You are responsible for the material on the syllabus for the first four weeks up to but not including Section 4.2 and for the material discussed in class during the first four weeks but not October 5. You may bring calculators to the exam but they are only to be used for the arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

General Comments on the Course:
This course is an introduction to number theory. The properties of numbers, that is, whole integers, will be studied in detail.The mathematical requirements for beginning the study of number theory are minimal. We will consider a variety of elementary but important results and conjectures, and illustrate a few of the applications of basic number theory.
The ORC prerequisite for this class is Math 8 (Calculus II), but in reality virtually no calculus is needed. Perhaps the most important determinant for learning this material is willingness to immerse oneself in these ideas and think diligently about them.

- Readings from the text will be assigned for each class period and homework will be assigned weekly. For the assignments, see Syllabus and Homework Assignments. Homework will be collected with the assignment for week n due on Wednesday of week n+1.
- Each of the two midterm exams will have an in-class part and a take-home part. The in-class part is scheduled to take place during the x-hour of the fifth and the eighth week. Specifically, the first in-class midterm will be on Tuesday, October 9, 12:00-12:50 and the second will be on Tuesday, October 30, 12:00-12:50.
- The course grade will be based upon the exams and the homework assignments. The distribution of points is as follows.

- On Exams: No help given or received.
- On Homework: Students are encouraged to work together with one or two classmates and/or to seek help from the instructor. Office hours are on Tuesday, the day before homework is due, and students are strongly encouraged to come by for help. Students should state on their homework paper the names of those with whom they have collaborated. What is important in doing homework is the eventual comprehension of the solution of the problem.
When a student writes up a homework problem it is to be his or her own understanding of how to solve the problem. The solutions that a student submits must be written by him or her alone. Any copying of another person's solutions will be regarded as a violation of the Honor Code.
