Tutors and Study Groups

The IAS Program in the First Year Office is running study groups for this course. Classes will be broken up into small groups for the purpose of reviewing the previous week's materials and for doing homework. An undergraduate tutor will direct each group. Tutorials will meet in the evening on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you are not currently in a study group, contact your instructor for more information.

Homework

Homework will be assigned weekly, and will be due each Monday at the beginning of class. New assignements will be posted on the course webpage on Monday after class (no later than 6pm). Each assignment will be worth 7 points, and total points will be scaled between the two sections (see Grades section). Late homework will NOT be accepted.

Some things to note while working on the homework:

• Write your name on each assignment. This probably sounds obvious, but is sometimes easy to forget.
• Label the problems. Each problem should be numbered, and its page number indicated. Also, make sure your handwriting is legible; if the instructors can't read your solution, they can't give you credit.
• Make sure to show all work for each problem, whether you complete it or not. Your instructors want to give you points, so the more work you show us the better.
• Don't be afraid to use a little extra space to write out each problem; if necessary, use a whole page for a difficult exercise.
• If you have a question about the homework, feel free to e-mail the instructors, visit them during office hours, or make an appointment.

Quizzes

There will be a total of 7 quizzes throughout the term, given on Thursdays or Wednesdays (check the syllabus for exact dates). At the end of the term, your lowest quiz score will be dropped from the final calculation.

Examinations

There will be two exams and a final in this course:

Exam 1: Tuesday, January 25, 6:00-8:00pm, 028 Silsby Hall.

Exam 2: Thursday, February 17, 6:00-8:00pm, 028 Silsby Hall.

Final Exam: Saturday, March 12, 105 Dartmouth Hall.

The grades in this course will be calculated as follows:

* Your lowest quiz score will be dropped from the final calculation.

Homework grades will be scaled to match between the two sections; that is, if one instructor gives harder or easier grades with respect to the other, the overall totals will be weighted to reflect a similar distribution of points between the two course sections.

Also, extra credit questions will be given periodically throughout the term.

On Homework: Working together is permitted and encouraged, but NO COPYING.   You are welcome to work in groups to discuss the ideas and specific problems (also feel free to discuss with your instructors, tutors, and anyone else you may find). However, each student is expected to produce the final written homework set individually and independently.
