MATH 6, Summer 2001
Introduction to Finite Math
Homework for Week 6
Assigned Monday 7/23:
Read the logic handout from class. The explanations given in the text are rather unclear, I recommend using the handout as the primary reference for logic.
The review for the midterm is located here. Solutions will be posted this afternoon.
Complete the following problems:
From the packet, p. 11: 1, 3cd, 4ab, 6f, 7af, 10, 21a, 24f
Assigned Wednesday 7/25:
Read the logic handout from class. Friday and Monday's class will use the notes from class, 12.4, and 12.5 in our text as references.
Complete the following problems:
From the packet, p.11: 8f, 9abcd, 15, 19a (also write the negation)
From the packet, p.19: 4
Assigned Friday 7/27:
Read 12.4 and 12.5 in the text.
Complete the following problems:
12.4: 6, 16a
12.5: exercises on p. 562: 1; practice problems on p. 561: 1
From the packet, p.19: 7d, 9d
Additional problem: In 12.4 on p.554 there is a table (#2) listing logical implications. In class we showed that the third logical implication, Modus ponens, was valid. Show that the fourth one, Modus tollens, is valid. It may help to refer to the definition of logical implication on p. 553 and the example in class.
