- Office Hours: Office hours on Friday, November 19 and Tuesday, November 23 are cancelled. Office hours will be held on Sunday, November 21 from 5:00 to 7:00.
- Last minute clarifications of Homework 7:
-Page 257: problem 10, assume that P contains no zero divisors of R.
-Page 258: problem 23 follows from problem 25, so you need only prove the latter.
-Page 301: problem 6, the ring structure can be described by showing the given ring isomorphic to a well-known ring or by showing the given ring isomorphic to one in which the binary operations are explicitly defined.
- The homework assignment on week 9 (Homework 8) will be due on Monday, November 9.
- Note that the statements in square brackets in the homework problems can be assumed. They do not have to be proved.

- Problems from the text will be assigned weekly. The assignment for a given week consists of all the problems listed as Written Homework for that week. It will be due on Wednesday of the following week, except possibly for the last weeks of the term. For more details, see Syllabus and Homework Assignments.
- There will be one take-home midterm examination handed out on the sixth week of the term. The final will also be a take-home exam.
The course grade will be based upon the total score obtained from the midterm exam, the final exam and the homework assignments. The distribution of points is as follows.

- On Exams: No help given or received.
- On Homework: Students are encouraged to work together with one or two classmates and/or to seek help from the instructor. Those students who do not know of anyone to work with but would like to collaborate should contact the instructor. Students should state on their homework paper the names of those with whom they have collaborated. What is important in doing homework is the eventual understanding of the problems.
When a student writes up a homework solution it is to be his or her own understanding of how to solve the problem. The solutions that a student submits must be written by him or her alone. Any copying of another person's solutions, in whole or in part, will be regarded as a violation of the Honor Code.
