Announcements

• The final exam will be held Friday, Dec 7, 11:30am-2:30pm, in Cook auditorium in Murdough Center (the same place as the second midterm).

• The final exam will cover the material from midterms 1 and 2 as well as sections 15.1-15.7, except for portions explicitly excluded on the syllabus. Additionally, you do not have to know Taylor's Inequality or reparametrization of curves, and while you will have to know how to use the second derivatives test, its statement will be provided to you. You do need to know your trigonometric identities (including half- and double-angle formulas) and the simple MacLaurin series from midterm 1. The exam is approximately half material from the first and second midterms and half material you have not yet been tested on. As always, previous course webpages are accessible from the math department web site. Note not many have final exams available; here are three that do.

• The week of Dec 2nd: Professors Mainkar and Weber will hold office hours at their regularly-scheduled time; Prof. Arkowitz will hold office hours Tu 1:30-3 and Th 2-4. Tutorials will run 7-9pm Dec 2, 4, 6 as usual.

• There will be two midterm examinations and a final examination. These exams are scheduled as follows:

• If you have a legitimate conflict with these exam dates and times, please contact your instructor as soon as possible. Please do not wait until shortly before the exam.

Homework Policy

• Homework sets will be assigned for each class and will normally be in two parts. The part to be submitted is due before the beginning of the next class period. The second part is not to be turned in, but some complete solutions are available via the web (see below).
• The graded portion of each homework assignments will be submitted via the web using WeBWork. If you do not receive an e-mail assigning you a login name and password for WeBWork, then you should contact your instructor via e-mail as soon as possible: martin.arkowitz@dartmouth.edu, rebecca.weber@dartmouth.edu or meera.mainkar@dartmouth.edu.
• Please note that WeBWork will not accept assignments past the closing date. Typically, assignments for Monday lectures will close at the start of Wednesday lecture, assignments for Wednesday lectures (and any x-hour lectures) will close at the start of Friday lecture and assignments for the Friday lectures will close at the start of Monday lecture. There will be appropriate adjustments for holidays.

• The second part of the assignment will consist mostly of odd numbered problems from the text. You can login to http://hotmath.com (using the password supplied in lecture) to see complete solutions of many of these problems. Note that hotmail currently only has 5th edition answers available. Many of these correspond to sixth edition problems; we will provide a translation page for the practice problems.

• The course grade will be based upon your total score on the two midterm exams, the final exam and the homework assignments for the course.

The Honor Principle

• On Exams: No help given or received. No calculators or computers are allowed.
  

• On Homework: Collaboration is permitted and encouraged -- a discussion of the general idea of the problem(s) with instructors, tutors, fellow students and others is desirable. However, each student is expected to complete his or her assignments individually and independently. Computing devices are allowed on homework.
  

Tutorials

• Tutorial assistance for this course; that is, help with your homework, will be available in Rooms 007 and 105, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings 7 - 9pm. Tutorials will begin on Thursday, September 7th. Our tutors are Dan Fontaine, Greg Petrics, and Lola (Lauren) Thompson. You may contact them directly via e-mail by clicking on their names above.
  

• Also note that the Tutor Clearinghouse may have private one-on-one tutors available for Math 8. The tutors are students who have taken the course and have done well in it, and are trained by the Academic Skills Center.
