Announcements

• We have reserved Cook Auditiorium from 10:30 to 3:30 on December 7. Students may choose to arrive to take the final at 10:30, 11:30 or 12:30 (and at no other times). Each student has three hours in which to work on the exam. The final will not be offered at any other time (except in cases when a student has three finals in one day and has made prior arrangements with the instructor or, as usual, in cases of illness or family emergency).

• The following is the approximate distrbution of material on the final exam:
  • (25%) The material that you were responsible for on the first midterm exam
  • (25%) The material that you were responsible for on the second midterm exam
  • (50%) The remaining material.

• There are two sets of practice problems for the final exam. The first can be found at First Practice Problem Set. (Note that problems (d) and (m) have been changed on 12/5.) The second can be found at Second Practice Problem Set. In addition, there are solutions to the first problem set at First Practice Problem Set Solutions and solutions to the second problem set at Second Practice Problem Set Solutions. The first set of practice problems is similar to a practice test, while the second set consists of practice problems on the new material. Some of you have requested that earlier practice problems and their solutions be accessible. For this, go to the end of the announcements.

• There will be a Q & A session on Friday from 12:30 to 2:30 in Room 008 in Kemeny Hall. Attendance is optional and you may come and leave at any time.

• On Sunday the tutorials will take place at the usual time and place.

• Professor Arkowitz will hold additional hold office hours on Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00.

• Beginning in week 9 (November 16) there will no longer be any written homework. All homework will be WebWork.

• The lecture notes for Section 1 of Math 8 have been written up and are accessible to all at Math 8 Lecture Notes

Exams

• There will be two midterm examinations and a final examination. These exams are scheduled as follows:

• If you have a legitimate conflict with these exam dates and times, please contact your instructor as soon as possible. Please do not wait until shortly before the exam.

Homework Policy

• There will be two separate parts to your homework assignments. The first, called WeBWork, is to be done on a computer and submitted via the web. Webwork assignments will be made each class day, as indicated on Syllabus and Homework Assignments. The assignment will be due at 10:00 am on the subsequent class day. You will only be able to submit the assignment during the time that it is open; at 10 am on the due date, the assignment will close and the correct answers will be available to view.


• The second part of the homework consists of several problems which will be assigned weekly. These problems are to be written up and handed in. For Sections 1 and 3 the assignments are to be handed in to the homework boxes outside the lecture room. They will be graded and returned in these homework boxes. In Section 2 they are to be handed in in class and will be returned in the homework boxes outside 008 Kemeny Hall. After Week 3, all written homework will be due on Wednesday at the start of class. Late homework can be submitted and will be recorded as late, but will not be graded unless excused because of medical reasons or a family emergency.


• There will be appropriate adjustments to the homework schedule for holidays. More details about homework are posted on the course assignment webpage (Syllabus and Homework Assignments).


• There will also be practice problems listed each class day consisting mostly of odd numbered problems from the text for those students who wish to do additional problems. These are optional and are not to be handed in. You can login to http://hotmath.com (using the password supplied in lecture) to see hints and complete solutions of many of these problems.

Grades

• The course grade will be based upon the total score obtained from the two midterm exams, the final exam and the homework assignments. There will be two grading schemes.

The first is

• At the end of the term each student will be assigned two percentage grades, one from each grading scheme. The larger number will then be used to determine the course grade for each student.

The Honor Principle

• On Exams: No help given or received. No calculators or computers are allowed.
  

• On Homework: Collaboration is permitted and encouraged -- a discussion of the general idea of the problem(s) with instructors, tutors, fellow students and others is desirable. However, each student is expected to complete his or her assignments individually and independently. Computing devices are allowed on homework.
  

Tutorials

• Tutorial assistance for this course, that is, help with your homework, will be available in Rooms 105 and 108 Kemeny Hall, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings 7 - 9:30 pm. Tutorials will begin on Thursday, September 24. Our tutors are Kassie Archer, Zebediah Engberg and Katie Kinnaird.
  

• Also note that the Tutor Clearinghouse has study groups and private one-on-one tutors available for Math 8. The study group leaders and the tutors are students who have taken the course and have done well in it, and they are trained by the Academic Skills Center.
