Homework Policy

Homework assignments will be posted in the homework section of the class website and will be due in on Wednesday's at the beginning of class. It is highly recommended that you begin each homework when it is set and that you work in groups. However it is requested that your final write up be done individually.

The written homework assignments will be supplemented by practice problems via the WebWork system. A username and password will be e-mailed to you at the start of the quarter. These problems are intended to allow you to try out the basic techniques taught in class and as such are invaluable practice for exams, quizzes and the written assignments. The WebWork problems are entirely voluntary and your scores will not be recorded. However students who do not regularly work these problems may find themselves insufficiently prepared for the exams. The WebWork assignments will open as the material is covered in class. (The due date just indicates when answers become available.)

The written homework scores not only count count towards your final grade and allow you to practice and refine your skills but, historically, those students who do the homework (and WebWork) sets regularly fair better on the exams.

Grades

The course grade will be based upon the scores on the quizzes, the midterm exam, the final exam, and the homework.

The Honor Principle

  • On Exams: No help given or received.
  • On Homework: Collaboration is permitted and encouraged, but no copying. Discussions of the general ideas of the class with instructors, tutors, fellow students and others are desirable and recommended.

Private Tutoring

Tutor Clearinghouse may have private one-on-one tutors available for Math 8/9. The tutors are recruited on the basis that they have done well in the subject, and are trained by the Academic Skills Center. If a student receives financial aid, the College will pay for three hours of tutoring per week. If you would like to have a tutor, please go to 301 Collis and fill out an application as early in the term as possible.

Disabilities

Students with disabilities who will be taking this course and may need disability-related classroom accommodations are encouraged to make an appointment to see their instructor as soon as possible. (All discussions will remain confidential, although the Student Disabilities Coordinator may be consulted to verify the documentation of the disability.)
