Mathland is a semester-long experience in mathematics for talented and curious high-school students. Through guided exploration and collaboration, alongside faculty and graduate students, participants learn topics in mathematics that are not part of a typical high school curriculum, such as number theory, combinatorics, geometry, and group theory. Mathlanders also learn to present proofs rigorously and clearly. Topics vary from year to year, so returning students can have as much fun as first-time students.
Our Values
Math is best learned actively. We encourage independent and creative thinking. With faculty as a guide, Mathlanders will develop important definitions and theorems on their own, by studying examples, working on problem sets, making and sharing observations, playing mathematical games, or solving puzzles. At Mathland, it is ok to share ideas even when you don't have a complete solution. Solving a problem is a process, and sometimes you have to play with an idea and fail in order to get on the right track.
The best math happens in a collaborative and inclusive environment. We are committed to fostering a welcoming environment where everyone can reach their true potential! Group work is a huge component of the typical day at Mathland, and Mathlanders are expected to treat each other with respect and dignity at all times. We encourage Mathlanders to share their questions, opinions, observations, conjectures and generalizations, with one another and with faculty.
Fall 2024
In Spring 2025, the program will run from January 18, 2025 through April 5, 2025. Meetings will be on Dartmouth campus on Saturdays, 9:30am-noon with a short break in the middle.
