Textbook and Syllabus

There is no required text and I hope that the lectures will be self-contained. The following texts are recommended and not required. Unfortunately, Baker Library does not allow them to be put on reserve. (Well, I guess I could put them on reserve, but they won't let you in to look at them.)

Probably, Royden will be the most useful for the course while Rudin and Folland are better long term investments.

The syllabus for this course has been recently modified so that the course title is now mis-leading. We will start with review of metrics spaces and move on to abstract measure theory. Some familiarity with metric spaces and the Riemann integral will be helpful but not technically required. We will no longer cover complex analysis.

Scheduled Lectures

Williams
MWF 2:35 - 3:40
(x-hour) Th 1:40 - 2:30
Remote

Lectures will be given remotely. UPDATE: Since most of us are in the eastern US, I am going to record the lectures during our class period to allow some live interaction. Obviously attendence is not required and anyone can view the lectures later -- or review them -- if they choose.

Giving the lectures live is an experiment. It is possible, perhaps even likely, that there will be some adjustments during the course of the term.

In any event, class meetings will be recorded.

The Honor Principle

Collaboration on homework is permitted and encouraged, but obviously it is a violation of the honor code for someone to provide the answers for you. You are expected to write up your own solutions and acknowledge any help you received.

On exams, you may not give or receive help from anyone. You may access your course notes and the recommended texts. No other help or sources, including the internet, are allowed.

(2) Requirement of consent to recordings

By enrolling in this course, I hereby affirm that I will not under any circumstance make a recording in any medium of any one-on-one meeting with the instructor without obtaining the prior written consent of all those participating, and I understand that if I violate this prohibition, I will be subject to discipline by Dartmouth up to and including expulsion, as well as any other civil or criminal penalties under applicable law.

Disabilities

Students requesting disability-related accommodations and services for this course are encouraged to schedule a phone/video meeting with me as early in the term as possible. This conversation will help to establish what supports are built into my online course. In order for accommodations to be authorized, students are required to consult with Student Accessibility Services (SAS; Student Accessibility Services office; SAS website; 603-646-9900) and to email me their SAS accommodation form. We will then work together with SAS if accommodations need to be modified based on the online learning environment. If students have questions about whether they are eligible for accommodations, they should contact the SAS office. All inquiries and discussions will remain confidential.

Stress and Mental Well-Being

The academic environment at Dartmouth is challenging, our terms are intensive, and classes are not the only demanding part of your life. There are a number of resources available to you on campus to support your wellness, including your undergraduate dean, Counseling and Human Development, and the Student Wellness Center. I encourage you to use these resources to take care of yourself throughout the term, and to come speak to me if you experience any difficulties.

Religious Observances

Some students may wish to take part in religious observances that occur during this academic term. If you have a religious observance that conflicts with your participation in the course, please meet with me before the end of the second week of the term to discuss appropriate accommodations.
