Memos

At the end of each week, you should submit a memo to your instructor (your instructor will let you know how she wants your memos to be submitted). These memos will help both you and your instructor to keep track of your progress in the course. In particular, your instructor wants to know if something happened during the week that you are particularly proud of, or if you had any specific difficulties with the topics that you studied. Let your instructor know if you feel that the class is going too fast or too slow. If there was an exam that week, feel free to give your instructor comments on the exam -- whether you thought it was too hard, too long, or if you felt that your grade doesn't represent how well you understand the material. Let your instructor know of any issues or concerns that you may have in the course. If the instructor feels that what you have voiced might be something the whole class might care about, she will address your question anonymously in a response to the class.

Homework

Homework will be assigned after each lecture and collected the following lecture before class begins. The assignment for the upcoming week will be posted under the Homework section of the webpage every weekend. Late homeworks will not be accepted. Homeworks will be carefully read so take care in what you turn in.

·  Clearly indicate the problem you are solving by numbering it appropriately.

·  Show ALL your work on every problem.

·  Make sure your name is on your assignment.

·  Try to make your handwriting as legible as possible.

Quizzes

There will be a total of 6 quizzes throughout the term, given on Wednesday during the scheduled class time (see the syllabus for exact dates). You may drop the lowest quiz grade. Quizzes will cover only the topics up to the preceding Monday. The quizzes will sometimes follow the homework assignments. Thus, it is vital that you attempt every homework problem before the quiz. You may reschedule a quiz ONLY ON THE FOLLOWING TERMS:

·  You alerted your instructor at least a week in advance,

·  The instructor agreed that your request to reschedule is valid, AND

·  You set up a time with your instructor to take the quiz.

Examinations

There will be two exams and a final in this course:

Exam 1:
    Wednesday, October 13, 7:00-9:00pm, Bradley 101
.

Exam 2:
    Wednesday, November 3, 7:00-9:00pm, Bradley 101
.

Final Exam:
    TBA

Review sessions will be held in class on midterm days instead of the usual quiz.
The emphasis in this class is on learning the material. At the end, the instructors hope that you will be able to answer every question they deem important enough to put on an exam. Thus, after each midterm has been graded, students will have the option to take the exam home and re-work the problems they missed for 25% of the credit. This means, if you receive a 70% on the midterm in class, you may raise your grade as high as 77.5%. When you re-work the problems at home you are allowed to use your book or talk to other students about the problems but you are on your honor not to write up any solutions that you do not fully understand.

Honor Principle

We encourage you to talk to each other about homework problems and to try to solve homework problems together, but you must write up your solutions independently and in your own words. You may consult other people or sources other than the course text, your class notes, and the instructor, but you must acknowledge these people and/or sources when you write up your homework. You are on your honor not to talk to another student about an exam until both students have turned in their exams.

Disabilities

Students in this course with disabilities and who may need disability-related classroom accommodations are encouraged to make an appointment to see their instructor as soon as possible. They should also stop by the Academic Skills Center in Collis Center to register for support services.
