Homework Policy

• Homework will be assigned daily and will be due at the beginning of the next class meeting (except as noted below), or as announced in the assignment.
• Generally late homework will not be accepted. Late or missing homework will count as zero. The lowest two daily homework grades will be dropped in determining the final homework grade.
• Approximately once a week a proof write-up will be assigned. These write-ups will receive a grade of credit or no credit; generally credit will be awarded only after a write-up has been commented on by the instructor, revised and resubmitted. Proof write-ups will account for about 25% of the homework grade.
• More information about proof write-ups will be distributed in class.
• Policy modification (January 6): Unless announced otherwise in the assignment, homework will be due at the beginning of the next class, unless that class is the very next day, in which case it will be due at the beginning of the following class. For example, homework assigned on Monday is due on Wednesday, even if there is an x-hour on Tuesday. Homework assigned on Tuesday is due on Friday. Be sure to notice, this means that on weeks with x-hours there will be two assignments due on Friday.
• You should always study the material from each class before the next class, even if the next class is the next day. Each class assumes the material covered in previous classes.

In-class Handouts

• Occasional handouts will be distributed in class. Extra copies will always be available at the instructor's office.

Grades

The course grade will be based upon the homework, midterm exams and final exam.

Exam 1	100 points.
Exam 2	100 points.
Final Exam	200 points.
Homework	100 points.

The Honor Principle

On Exams: No help on exams may be given or received.

On Homework: Collaboration on homework is permitted and encouraged; that is, you are encouraged to talk about the problems with each other and try to solve them together. However, you must write up homework solutions independently and in your own words.

Consulting the departmental writing editor on write-ups of proofs is also permitted and encouraged. If you do so, please submit both your first draft and the revision you produced after consulting the writing editor.

Disabilities

Students with disabilities who will be taking this course and may need disability-related classroom accommodations are encouraged to make an appointment to see the instructor as soon as possible. Also, they should stop by the Academic Skills Center in Collis Center to register for support services.
