Textbook

Linear Algebra by Friedberg, Insel, and Spence. I plan to follow the newer 5th edition, but it appears that the information on the course timetable improperly lists the 4th edition. If you have already bought the 4th edition, then don't get the 5th edition. But be aware that there may be differences in the homework exercises and I will try to alert students of these as they arise.

Scheduled Lectures

Our lectures will be given remotely during our regularly scheduled class times using the zoom link available on our canvas page. All lectures and discussions will be recorded and made available via this page as well as our canvas page. It will be advantageous to attend lectures live to participate in any discussions. Therefore attendence is recommended but not required.

We will use our x-hour on January 14 and January 21. After that I expect we will use our x-hour rarely, if at all. But that might change at short notice so your should live that time slot open.

Your timer will begin when you download the exam and your exam must be uploaded before the time limit expires and before the "due" date. The exam can be downloaded anytime after the "available" date.

Homework Policy

Grades

Your grade in the course will be determined by your total score on the homework, preliminary exam, midterm exam, and final exam. These are weighted as follows.

Homework 50 points
Preliminary Exam 70 points
Midterm Exam 120 points
Final Exam 160 points
Total 400 points

The Honor Principle

Academic integrity is at the core of our mission as mathematicians and educators, and we take it very seriously. We also believe in working and learning together.

On homework, you are allowed to work with others, get help in office hours, and even use the internet. However, you must write up your solutions on your own. By submitting a homework solution you are attesting that you are submitting your own work. Simply coping another students solution or cutting and pasting from the internet is a violation of the honor code.

On exams, you may not give or receive help from anyone. You may use your textbook, course notes, and all material distributed via the web page or our canvas page. Calculators and similar electronic computing devices are not permitted. In particular accessing the internet to research answers is an Honor Code violation.

Special Considerations

Recording Policies

(1) Consent to recording of course and group office hours

By enrolling in this course,

a) I affirm my understanding that the instructor may record this course and any associated group meetings involving students and the instructor, including but not limited to scheduled and ad hoc office hours and other consultations, within any digital platform used to offer remote instruction for this course;

b) I further affirm that the instructor owns the copyright to their instructional materials, of which these recordings constitute a part, and my distribution of any of these recordings in whole or in part without prior written consent of the instructor may be subject to discipline by Dartmouth up to and including expulsion;

(2) Requirement of consent to one-on-one recordings

By enrolling in this course, I hereby affirm that I will not under any circumstance make a recording in any medium of any one-on-one meeting with the instructor without obtaining the prior written consent of all those participating, and I understand that if I violate this prohibition, I will be subject to discipline by Dartmouth up to and including expulsion, as well as any other civil or criminal penalties under applicable law.

Disabilities

Students requesting disability-related accommodations and services for this course are encouraged to schedule a phone/video meeting with me as early in the term as possible. This conversation will help to establish what supports are built into my online course. In order for accommodations to be authorized, students are required to consult with Student Accessibility Services (SAS; Student Accessibility Services office; SAS website; 603-646-9900) and to email me their SAS accommodation form. We will then work together with SAS if accommodations need to be modified based on the online learning environment. If students have questions about whether they are eligible for accommodations, they should contact the SAS office. All inquiries and discussions will remain confidential.

Stress and Mental Well-Being

The academic environment at Dartmouth is challenging, our terms are intensive, and classes are not the only demanding part of your life. There are a number of resources available to you on campus to support your wellness, including your undergraduate dean, Counseling and Human Development, and the Student Wellness Center.

Religious Observances

Some students may wish to take part in religious observances that occur during this academic term. If you have a religious observance that conflicts with your participation in the course, please meet with me before the end of the second week of the term to discuss appropriate accommodations.
