Homework Assigments

Week of September 11 to September 15
Assignments Made on:
Monday:
  • Study: Review Sections 1.4 and 1.5 on exponentials and logarithms. We will have little say about these sections in class. You should also read Section 2.1
  • Do:
    1. Work "Homework 0" from our gradescope page. This is just a practice assignment to ensure that you know how to access, scan, and upload the written assignments.
    2. Work WeBWork 1. The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to familarize yourself with how WeBWork works. Note that you access WeBWork through the "Assignments" link on our canvas page.
  • Suggested Self Study: Although it is not required, you can enhance and confirm your understanding of each section in the text that we cover by working odd numbered problems in the exercises. (Usually, the solutions to the odd numbered exercises are in the back of the book.) Here you might look at 1, 3 and 19 in Section 1.4, 1, 25, and 39 in Section 1.5, and 1 and 5 in Section 2.1.
Wednesday:
  • Study: Read Sections 2.2 and 2.3 in the text.
  • Do:
    1. Work WeBWork 2. NOTE: there was an issue with Problem 1 on WeBWork 2. Originally, the question asked about limits at infinity which we don't over until section 2.6. These questions are gone now, but if you already worked the question you don't have to go back. For the record, $\displaystyle \lim_{x\to\infty} f(x)=-2$ and $\displaystyle \lim_{x\to -\infty}f(x)=2$.
    2. Download the first written assignment from gradescope. It is not due until Monday, but you can work the appropriate problems as we cover the material in lecture.
  • Suggested Self Study: In section 2.2, look at 5, 7, 11, 29, and 31. (Recall that you are not required to work self study problems nor should you turn them in.)
Friday:
  • Study: Read Section 2.4.
  • Do:
    1. Work WeBWork 3.
    2. Finish the first Written assignment.
    3. Week one is nearly in the books. Enjoy the weekend.
  • Suggested Self Study: In section 2.3, look at 17, 19, 33, and 41. In section 2.4, look at 1, 15, and 23. If you'd like a challenge, try 36 or 37.

Week of September 18 to 22
Assignments Made on:
Monday:
  • Study: Read section 2.5. Review appendix D on trigonometric functions.
  • Do: Work WeBWork 4.
  • Suggested Self Study: In section 2.5 try 3, 25, 43, 49, and 59.
Wednesday:
  • Study: Read section 2.6.

Friday:
  • Study: Read sections 2.7 and 2.8.

Friday:
  • Study: Read Section 3.6 and 3.7 of the text. We will cover little, if any, of section 3.7 in lecture. But there are some interesting applications of differentiation there.
  • Do:
    1. WeBWork 12.
    2. Finish the written homework.
  • Suggested Self Study: In section 3.6, try 7, 37, 47, 51, and 67. In section 3.7, try 5, 11, and 17.

  • Suggested Self Study: In section 3.9, try 17, 19, 25, and 39.
Friday:
  • Study: Read section 3.10 and 3.11. The key concept in section 3.10 is the linearization of a function at a point $a$, and using the linearization to approximate the function near $a$. We will have time to only quickly cover the material in section 3.11. The key idea here is the definition of $\sinh(x)$ and $\cosh(x)$. Then the additional properties are derived as for the trigonometic functions and the identity $\cosh^2(x)-\sinh^2(x)=1$.

    2. Finish the written homework.
  • Suggested Self Study: In section 3.10, try 5, 7, 9, and 41. In section 3.11, try 11, 19, 37, and 41.
