SYLLABUS Homework 1
Homework 2The first purpose of this homework is to cement what you learned this week by putting it in writing. The second purpose is to introduce you to Kali, the free geometry program used to generate the designs we studied last week. You can find Kali on the Syllabus page and download it onto any MACINTOSH. After generating designs you should save them as pdf files and mail them to yourself, if you aren't using your own computer.
Part 1: Writing about math. Please give a short description of each of the seven frieze patterns that would make it possible for someone to identify patterns correctly from your description.
Part 2: Writing about art. What makes a good black and white design, based on your analysis of the patterns we looked at this week? Illustrate your essay with some good and bad examples that you yourself generate using Kali. To succeed in this assignment you have to make at least three good designs with Kali!
Part 3: getting ready for next week. Go to Bean's art supply and tell them you are in my class. They will give you the following things to purchase:
- A medium sized piece of soft block printing material
- A set of carving tools
- A brayer (which is just a little paint roller) and plexiglas
In addition you should pick up:
- Two tubes of water based printing ink in two interesting clear colors (not brown, white, black, mauve, puce, etc.) plus one tube of black.
- newsprint for practice
- a small amount of good paper (your choice but start small in case you change your mind)
