Friday:  (due 2/8/06)
  • Problems 29, 30 from Section 5.2 of text
  • Problems 2, 4, 6, 8  from Section 5.4 of text -- for these problems you only need to set up an integral that can be used to calculate volume of the solid (you do not need to compute the volume)
  • Problems 1, 3, 5, 7, 17* from Section 5.4 of text  -- for these problems you should follow the directions that are in the text
  • (* This link will give you an idea what the wedge looks like.  The math in this link is quite complicated, but you may find it helpful to rotate the wedge around to determine your base and cross sections.)
  • To see some animations of "volume by cross section" go here
  • Read Section 5.4 of text

Week of Feb 6-10
Assignments made on:
Monday:  (due 2/8/06)
  • Problems 13, 14, 18** from Section 5.4 of text
  • (** This link will help you see what the solid of intersection looks like.  You can rotate the solid to see what it looks like -- if you rotate it correctly, it is easy to see that the cross sections are squares.  Ignore the math in this link -- it is beyond what we are doing in this class.  You may find it interesting to scroll down and see pictures of more than two intersecting cylinders -- if you take more calculus classes, you'll be able to find the volumes of these solids.)
Wednesday and Thursday:  (due 2/15/06)
  • Problems 1-4, 7, 8, 13, 30, 31-34, 37 from Section 5.5 of text -- for problems 31-34, just set up the integral (do not evaluate it)
Please hand your journals in on Thursday this week since there will not be class on Friday.
