Due Tuesday, Nov. 27

This assignment requires two block prints. The first should be a *632. This is a very difficult pattern to execute, requiring a symmetric block of a special shape. Study the fundamental region for this pattern and use Kali to get some preliminary ideas. The symmetry group of the second print should be a subgroup of the first. You can find subgroups by breaking a symmetry of *632 using color. Some sheets are attached with a *632 on them that you can use to experiment.

As we have discussed in class, symmetry is more or less in the eye of the beholder, as one always must ignore certain details or imperfections in a design in order to see the symmetry. In your two designs, play with this idea. Make the *632 as perfect as possible, but let yourself take liberties with the second print. Can you introduce error, imperfection, texture, to make the print more interesting while keeping the symmetry plainly visible? Do you get a more interesting image this way? Bring these to class on Nov. 27. Please have them done then! We will not have time to look at them on the 29th, which is the last day of class.
