Abstract: To what extent does the collision of light in a space determine the underlying geometry of that space? I'll discuss several conjectures and supporting results which aim to characterize symmetric spaces in terms of how difficult it is to shade points away from other points with point shades. This talk is based on joint work with Keith Burns, Jean Lafont, and Juan Souto.

This talk will be accessible to graduate students.
